Prof. Dr. Jens Schröter (mit Prof. Dr. Anna Echterhölter, Prof. Dr. Alexander Waibel, PD Dr. Andreas Sudmann): »How is Artificial Intelligence Changing Science? Research in the Era of Learning Algorithms«, VW Stiftung Planning Grant (bewilligt 12/2019)

Ein Antrag von Prof. Dr. Jens Schröter (zusammen mit Anna Echterhölter, Alexander Waibel und Andreas Sudmann) "How is Artificial Intelligence Changing Science? Research in the Era of Learning Algorithms" (VW Stiftung, Förderlinie "Artificial Intelligence and Society", Planning Grant) wurde bewilligt. Er dient der Vorbereitung eines Mains Grants zum Thema.

How do artificial intelligence (AI) technologies affect science? This is the key question of the research project (for which planning funds are applied here as a first step in order to find suitable international cooperation partners and to elaborate it in methodological terms). As such, it is less about research on AI itself, but rather how different disciplines use AI as a tool. T One central question is about how heterogenous concepts and operations of the social sciences and humanities on the one hand, and the natural and technical sciences on the other, are integrated into applications of AI. The latter also includes the extent to which critical perspectives inform and accompany the use of AI. The main focus will be on artificial neural networks (ANN), due to their dominant status among current AI approaches. In order to extend the scope to an international level, the project covers a variety of disciplines across Europe, including the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Hence, the project does not only explore the similarities and differences of how AI is deployed in various fields of science, but also to shed light on the cultural or national specificities inherent to this processes.
